This 3-day workshop consists of short lectures introducing course material and small group practice sessions with simulated patients. Experienced facilitators will guide and support you throughout the course.
Topics covered include fundamental communication skills, responding to emotion, discussing treatment options, discussing serious news, conflict, mismatched expectations, goals of care, assisted dying and transitions to end of life. The majority of cases will be based around oncology and palliative care scenarios, but this year we have widened the scope to include renal and general medical/geriatrics scenarios. No specialty specific knowledge is required, and the course is suitable for all medical specialties. Although initially developed for advanced trainee registrars, the course is appropriate for SMOs, registrars and senior nurses.
This course is endorsed by the RACP / NZ Medical Oncology Advanced Training Committee as meeting the communication skills requirements for medical oncology advanced trainees.
Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are provided daily.
