About the Role

Are you an Advanced Trainee in Palliative Medicine, a candidate for the Clinical Foundations in Palliative Medicine, or a clinician who wants to experience the challenge and excitement of learning palliative medicine in a truly unique, remote setting? And living and working in one of the most beautiful places in the world, in the heart of Aboriginal Australia? Do you have an interest in practising medicine in a cultural setting very different from the one in which you trained, dealing with health issues not seen elsewhere in Australia, in a hospital with the aspiration to provide high quality, culturally safe care?

About the Service

Our service is based at Alice Springs Hospital, caring for the 35,000 residents of Alice Springs plus 20,000+ people across Central Australia's remote communities - a region covering a million square kilometres. We offer in-patient care in a newly built 10 bed unit, while our community team supports the whole region, including outreach to Tennant Creek, and our hospital consult service cares for inpatients. We have close, supportive relationships with all hospital teams - Emergency, Medical Oncology, Medical, Surgical, Renal, Retrievals, ICU - and share care with remote clinics, Aboriginal health services and town GPs, with a 24/7 on call service.

Alice Springs is iconic and diverse, with a young, vibrant, multicultural population. Renowned for its friendly, easy-going lifestyle, it attracts people from all walks of life, coming to experience the unique blend of hospitality, tranquillity and spectacular beauty of the landscape. Commuting is a breeze, with no traffic jams, and it would be unusual to take more than 10 minutes to get anywhere. It is a cyclists' dream, and a quirky and fun place to live.

Alice Springs is located in an area of great scenic beauty with rugged ranges and spectacular gorges and waterholes within an arid, desert landscape. There are many beautiful places to camp under the stars, swim through the gorges, explore ancient mountain ranges, and hit world-class mountain bike trails. You will live in the midst of Aboriginal culture, language and art, with numerous sporting, recreational and cultural activities and good shopping and educational facilities to suit families and single people.

Training Opportunities

Registrar positions run 6 months, or a year for advanced trainees completing an Integrated Rural Term (Community and Inpatient core terms over 12 months). We're accredited for the Clinical Foundations in Palliative Medicine. Rotations through another specialty are available, gaining experience in acute General Medicine - Nephrology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, or other hospital teams. Rural generalist trainees pursuing AST/ARST in Palliative Medicine can complete 6mths specialist palliative care plus 6mths related training (eg oncology/renal), with ongoing supervision.
